When you sign up to a forum, the first thing you should do is create a signature. This will gain you free traffic just for participating in a conversation.

Adsense Placement Guide
This is the official Google Adsense heat map. It shows you which ad placement locations tend to be more successful. The dark orange areas tend to be more successful than the lighter areas.
Obviously, this can vary between websites - so I strongly urge you to experiment with ad placement yourself. Change your ad placement every month and compare results.
